Heart Phoenix’s Constant Evolution

The only constant at Burning Man, besides the dust and bacon, is change. Without  movement there is no life, and without evolution projects can go stale. The best camps are led by and composed of individuals that never stop pushing themselves to redefine and better themselves, and that attitude shows through in their on-playa contributions.

This philosophy is reflected in my current camp project, Heart Phoenix, a reincarnation of the late Heart Deco. Heart Deco was created in 2010 by Adam Ebel, as a therapeutic community project. Heart Deco had three incredible years on the playa as a multi- experiential art and sound car. In 2013 it underwent an intense rebirth and upgrade, to become Heart Phoenix.

The completed artcar takes two full days, heavy equipment, and a dedicated crew to put together on playa. Once it is completed, participants look at it and don’t believe it is a bus at all. It looks instead like an elaborate stage set-up.

After the bus’s success last year, we are heading back with an even bigger vision: besides upgrades on the bus itself (including some seriously badass lights) we are also hosting a full fledged multi-dimensional camp on Esplanade. In addition to our traditional musical and art journeys aboard Heart Phoenix, we are diving deeper in all the things that we love about Burning Man: art, spirituality, performance, music, and unbridled joy. Our camp will feature a 25′ interactive art installation, a sacred space dome featuring daily yoga classes and workshops, themed happy hour day parties, and of course we’ll bring the bus out to deep playa for more musical adventures.

Our camp has A LOT of work to do in a short amount of time! Please consider dropping us some support via our Indiegogo campaign.

“Every once in a while an idea comes along that is so powerful… so compelling… so right… you just can’t get it out of your mind until you see it. Each of my art installations have been exactly like that… and this one is not excluded by any means.

I came up with the concept for Heart Phoenix while traveling through SE Asia in the fall of 2010 after the debut of Heart Deco – and here we are 2+ years later actually building this incredible work of art for Burning Man.

My team and I completed Heart Deco in 60 days from start to finish, and we were gifted with 3 amazing years and the support of the entire Burning Man community. We felt it – and we’ll never forget it. This year we felt something else – that the time was right to evolve our project and bring a new inspired design to the playa.

This redesign celebrates the essence of transformation. Heart Phoenix captures a moment… a snapshot of a massive transformation taking place. This piece celebrates a joyous expansion and rediscovery of our hearts… of our true selves. The beautiful places within us and each other that we may have lost touch with… or maybe never knew at all. And finally… a (re)discovery of magic and possibility.

We want to illuminate these possibilities on the playa in 2013 through this singularity – this moment where a phoenix is being reborn from its ashes while singing an entrancing song… one so beautiful it makes even the sun stop to listen.” -Adam Ebel, Heart Phoenix founder and designer
